Blogging 101: Ten tips for beginners
Blogging is a strange and daunting task. And it wasn’t until the six-month mark that I really got into the swing of things. So here are some of my top tips, and ten questions I had when I first started.
When should I start my blog?
Now! Yesterday! My only regret is that I didn’t start sooner. I had thought about it, but it took two years to take the plunge.
How do I start my blog?
Before you go public, you should have about a week or two’s worth of content. And then slowly start feeding it in. It’s always a good idea to have content lined up. Especially when you’re first starting.
How do I grow my audience?
It’s a social network, remember? So get active! Start liking, commenting, and following people. The best accounts to target are other bloggers (big and small), and the people who follow accounts you love.
How many social media platforms should I be on?
Focus on the platforms that work for you. Personally, I stick to Instagram and Snapchat/Insta Stories. I have a Twitter and Facebook account, but I never go on them. If you try to do it all, you will run yourself dry.
How often should I post?
When you’re first starting out, once a day is great on social media. Posting too often will run the risk of decreasing your engagement. For blog posts, I suggest twice a week. But it really boils down to whatever works for you. Whether it’s once a week or once a day, consistency is key.
How do I start working with brands?
Put your email on all your social media bios. They will reach out to you.
How do I get paid collaborations?
Once you’ve built up an engaged following, you can send your rates back to brands when they reach out to you. And don’t feel intimidated. It’s not about how many followers you have, but what kind of followers they are. If they’re really engaged and you have a strong voice, that’s far more valuable. And brands recognize that.
How do I stand out in such a saturated market?
The most important thing is staying true to yourself and your style. It’s so easy to get influenced by the trends and what we see on social media. But the more you stay true to yourself, the more you will stand out amongst the crowd.
How do I take good blog photos?
Always shoot in natural light. A cloudy day or in the shade is ideal. And if you’re indoors, be near a window.
How do I build an aesthetically pleasing Instagram feed?
Find what you like, and stick to it. If you like color, go crazy with it. If you’re a minimalist, stay within a neutral palate. If you like cool tones, dial down the temperature for every photo you post. The content of each photo should be unique, but the “vibe” should be the same. This is what differenciates between standout accounts and and just ones with good photos.
